WASHINGTON – The U.S. Small Business Administration , in consultation with the U.S. Treasury Department, will re-open the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan portal to PPP-eligible lenders with $1 billion or less in assets for First and Second Draw applications on Friday, January 15, 2021 at 9 a.m. EST. The portal will fully open on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 to all participating PPP lenders to submit First and Second Draw loan applications to SBA.

Earlier in the week, SBA granted dedicated PPP access to Community Financial Institutions (CFIs) which include Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs), Minority Depository Institutions (MDIs), Certified Development Companies (CDCs), and Microloan Intermediaries as part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to reach underserved and minority small businesses.

On Friday, SBA will continue its emphasis on reaching smaller lenders and businesses by opening to approximately 5,000 more lenders, including community banks, credit unions, and farm credit institutions. Moreover, the agency also plans to have dedicated service hours for these smaller lenders after the portal fully re-opens next week.

“A second round of PPP could not have come at a better time, and the SBA is making every effort to ensure small businesses have the emergency financial support they need to continuing weathering this time of uncertainty,” said SBA Administrator Jovita Carranza . “SBA has worked expeditiously to ensure our policies and systems are re-launched so that this vital small business aid helps communities hardest hit by the pandemic. I strongly encourage America’s entrepreneurs needing financial assistance to apply for a First or Second Draw PPP loan.”

“We are pleased to have opened PPP loans to CDFIs, MDIs, CDCs, and Microloan Intermediaries. The PPP is already providing America’s small businesses hardest hit by the pandemic with vital economic relief,” said Secretary of the Treasury Steven T. Mnuchin. “As the Program re-opens for all First and Second Draw borrowers next week, the PPP will allow small businesses to keep workers on payroll and connected to their health insurance.”

First Draw PPP Loans are for those borrowers who have not received a PPP loan before August 8, 2020. The first round of the PPP, which ran from March to August 2020, was a historic success helping 5.2 million small businesses keep 51 million American workers employed.

Second Draw PPP Loans are for eligible small businesses with 300 employees or less, that previously received a First Draw PPP Loan and will use or have used the full amount only for authorized uses, and that can demonstrate at least a 25% reduction in gross receipts between comparable quarters in 2019 and 2020. The maximum amount of a Second Draw PPP loan is $2 million.

COMMUNITY FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS GET DEDICATED ACCESS STARTING TODAY

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Small Business Administration , in consultation with the U.S. Treasury Department, re-opened the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan portal today at 9 am ET. SBA is continuing its dedicated commitment to underserved small businesses and to addressing potential access to capital barriers by initially granting PPP access exclusively to community financial institutions (CFIs) that typically serve these concerns.

When the PPP loan portal re-opened today, it initially accepted First Draw PPP loan applications from participating CFIs, which include Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs), Minority Depository Institutions (MDIs), Certified Development Companies (CDCs) and Microloan Intermediaries. These lenders made up approximately 10% of all PPP participating lenders in 2020. A First Draw PPP loan is for those borrowers who have yet to receive a PPP loan before the program closed in August 2020.

On Jan. 13, 2021, participating CFIs may begin submitting application information to SBA for Second Draw PPP loans. A Second Draw PPP loan is for certain eligible borrowers that previously received a PPP loan, generally have 300 employees or less, and has suffered a 25% reduction in gross receipts. At least $15 billion is set aside for additional PPP lending by CFIs.

A few days later, additional lenders will be able to submit First and Second draw PPP loan applications. SBA will continue to provide updates on systems operations during the week of Jan. 11, 2021. Additionally, SBA plans to dedicate specific times to process and assist the smallest PPP lenders with loan applications from eligible small businesses.

The opening of the SBA loan system is designed to efficiently and effectively implement the Economic Aid to Hard-Hit Small Businesses, Nonprofits, and Venues Act and to ensure increased access to the PPP for minority-, underserved-, veteran- and women-owned small business concerns. SBA also is calling upon its lending partners to redouble their efforts to assist eligible borrowers in underserved and disadvantaged communities.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) , in consultation with the Treasury Department, announced today that the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) will re-open the week of January 11 for new borrowers and certain existing PPP borrowers. To promote access to capital, initially only community financial institutions will be able to make First Draw PPP Loans on Monday, January 11, and Second Draw PPP Loans on Wednesday, January 13. The PPP will open to all participating lenders shortly thereafter. Updated PPP guidance outlining Program changes to enhance its effectiveness and accessibility was released on January 6 in accordance with the Economic Aid to Hard-Hit Small Businesses, Non-Profits, and Venues Act.

This round of the PPP continues to prioritize millions of Americans employed by small businesses by authorizing up to $284 billion toward job retention and certain other expenses through March 31, 2021, and by allowing certain existing PPP borrowers to apply for a Second Draw PPP Loan.

“The historically successful Paycheck Protection Program served as an economic lifeline to millions of small businesses and their employees when they needed it most,” said Administrator Jovita Carranza.

“Today’s guidance builds on the success of the program and adapts to the changing needs of small business owners by providing targeted relief and a simpler forgiveness process to ensure their path to recovery.”

“The Paycheck Protection Program has successfully provided 5.2 million loans worth $525 billion to America’s small businesses, supporting more than 51 million jobs,” said Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin.

“This updated guidance enhances the PPP’s targeted relief to small businesses most impacted by COVID-19. We are committed to implementing this round of PPP quickly to continue supporting American small businesses and their workers.”
Key PPP updates include:

PPP borrowers can set their PPP loan’s covered period to be any length between 8 and 24 weeks to best meet their business needs;
PPP loans will cover additional expenses, including operations expenditures, property damage costs, supplier costs, and worker protection expenditures;
The Program’s eligibility is expanded to include 501(c)(6)s, housing cooperatives, direct marketing organizations, among other types of organizations;
The PPP provides greater flexibility for seasonal employees;
Certain existing PPP borrowers can request to modify their First Draw PPP Loan amount; and
Certain existing PPP borrowers are now eligible to apply for a Second Draw PPP Loan.

A borrower is generally eligible for a Second Draw PPP Loan if the borrower:

Previously received a First Draw PPP Loan and will or has used the full amount only for authorized uses;
Has no more than 300 employees; and
Can demonstrate at least a 25% reduction in gross receipts between comparable quarters in 2019 and 2020.

University of Nevada, Reno Extension offers free radon test kits at offices statewide

RENO, Nev . – January is National Radon Action Month, and University of Nevada, Reno Extension’s Radon Education Program is offering free short-term radon test kits to Nevadans through Feb. 28. Radon test kits are available at Extension offices and partnering locations statewide.

Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless and tasteless. It comes from the ground and can accumulate in homes, raising the risk of lung cancer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates 21,000 Americans die each year from radon-caused lung cancer, killing more people than secondhand smoke, drunk driving and house fires.

In Nevada, one in four homes tested show radon concentrations at or above the EPA action level. According to experts, living in a home with radon concentrations at the action level poses a similar risk of developing lung cancer as smoking about half a pack of cigarettes a day.

The risk of radon-caused lung cancer can be reduced. A simple three-day test can determine if a house has a radon problem, and winter is an ideal time to test a home for radon. If radon problems are found, they can be fixed.

NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF TAXATION ANNOUNCES DATES FOR TAX AMNESTY PROGRAM

Carson City, Nevada - The 31st Special Session of the Nevada Legislature enacted Senate Bill 3, which provides for a one-time tax amnesty program for businesses or individuals doing business in Nevada who may have an existing tax liability. The amnesty period will begin February 1, 2021 and ends on May 1, 2021. Businesses or individuals may pay the delinquent tax online using a credit card or debit card or by sending a check by mail, please see instructions below.

The amnesty program allows penalty and interest to be waived providing the outstanding tax delinquency meets the following criteria:

The tax was due and payable on or before 6/30/2020, which includes: a. All monthly tax returns due on or before June 30, 2020, and b. All quarterly tax returns due on or before April 30, 2020

The delinquent tax amount was paid in full for the period. If a taxpayer has several delinquent returns but is only able to pay one or more periods, the penalty and interest may be waived for each period providing the tax is paid in full and;
The delinquent tax is paid during the amnesty period of February 1, 2021 and May 1, 2021.
The types of taxes included in the amnesty program are as follows: Sales & Use Tax, Modified Business Tax, Cigarette Tax, Other Tobacco Products Tax, Liquor Tax, Bank Branch Excise Tax, Insurance Premium Tax, Tire Tax, Live Entertainment Tax (non-gaming), Short Term Lessor (Passenger Car Governmental Service Fee) , Exhibition Facilities Fees, Commerce Tax, Transportation Connection Tax, Wholesale Marijuana Excise Tax, Retail Marijuana Excise Tax, Centrally Assessed Property Tax, and Net Proceeds of Mineral Tax.

Taxes that are not included in the amnesty program include, Lodging Tax; Real Property Transfer Tax and Locally Assessed Property Tax.

The amnesty program does not apply to businesses or individuals who have:

Entered into a compromise or settlement agreement with the Department of Taxation or Nevada Tax Commission regarding the unpaid tax or assessment, or
Are currently under audit but has not received a final deficiency determination prior to the last day of the amnesty period.

A business or individual who pays the delinquent tax during the amnesty program may be selected for an audit in the same manner as a person who does not pay delinquent taxes during the amnesty program.

CDC UPDATES GUIDANCE SHORTENING QUARANTINE PERIOD

Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health issues Technical Bulletin reflecting updated guidance from CDC

Carson City, NV – Today updated guidance was issued from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding the shortening of the quarantine period for those exposed to COVID-19.

Individuals may now resume normal activity after 7 days if they tested negative starting on day 5 of the quarantine or after 10 days if they remain asymptomatic and testing is not available. When testing is not available, individuals who were exposed to COVID-19 and remain asymptomatic must be quarantined for 10 days from the time of their most recent exposure. This includes, but is not limited to, at home quarantine, in a hotel or dormitory room, or in a group quarantine facility.

Previously, the CDC guidelines recommended a 14-day period for quarantined individuals.

Recent data analysis demonstrated that most of those exposed to COVID-19 who later developed the infection did so on the third to fifth day after exposure rather than later, hence the shortening of recommended quarantine.

The Division of Public and Behavioral Health has issued a Technical Bulletin with information on these updates..

CDC UPDATED GUIDANCE FOR REDUCING QUARANTINE PERIOD FOR CONTACTS OF PERSONS WITH COVID-19 INFECTION

This bulletin is intended for employers and businesses; health care providers; and public health officials managing persons who could have been exposed to COVID-19 and undergoing quarantine. The bulletin describes the newly revised guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to shorten the required quarantine period for individuals with recent exposure history to COVID-19 from 14 days down to 7 days with negative testing, OR for 10 days if testing is not available.

The new guidelines allow individuals who have come in contact with someone infected with COVID-19 to resume normal activity after 10 days, or 7 days if they tested negative starting on day 5 of the quarantine. This includes, but is not limited to, at home quarantine, in a hotel or dormitory room, or in a group quarantine facility.

Most recent CDC Guidelines NO longer recommend 14 days for quarantined individuals. CDC just shortened the quarantine period required for individuals with recent history of exposure to COVID-19 from 14 days down to 7 days from the date of the most recent exposure, as long as they remain asymptomatic and receive a negative test on or after day 5 of the exposure. When testing is not available, individuals who were exposed to COVID-19 and remain asymptomatic must be quarantined for 10 days from the time of their most recent exposure.

Background
Maximum incubation period for individuals exposed to COVID-19 who contracted and developed the infection is thought to extend up to 14 days from their most recent exposure. However, recent data analysis demonstrated that most of those exposed to COVID-19 who later developed the infection did that on the third to fifth day after exposure.

Timely and appropriate quarantining of those who might have been exposed to COVID-19 is a proven effective public health measure to control and contain the spread of infections including COVID-19.

Although “quarantine and isolation” involve similar measures and both aim to prevent disease transmission through physical distancing, their purposes are quite different. “Quarantine” implies the restriction of activities or the separation of persons who are NOT yet ill, but might have been exposed to an infectious agent, with the objective of regularly monitoring their symptoms to determine if they contracted and developed the infection and to ensure early detection of cases. On the other hand, “isolation” is the separation of those who are already ill, in order to prevent the spread of infection or contamination.

Health care providers should immediately notify both infection control personnel at their health care facility and their local/state health department in the event of a probable or confirmed case of COVID-19.

MESQUITE, NV (Leisure Services Dept.) – Thinking about decorating your home or business for the holidays? It’s time to get out of the house and get in the holiday spirit and join us for the Holiday Decorating contest and show it off by entering the City of Mesquites decorating contest! Holiday displays can include light displays on the entire house or building. All decorations need to be visible from the sidewalk in front of the resident or business.

Applications are being accepted now through Wednesday, December 16 at 7:00 p.m. and are limited to the first 50 applications received. Pick up an application for this free event at the Mesquite Recreation Center or on the City’s website.

We are encouraging community pride by decorating in the spirit of the holiday. MESQUITE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE RECEIVES GRANTS FROM THE COVID-19 RURAL RECOVERY GRANT PROGRAM

[Mesquite, NV, November 5, 2020] The Mesquite Chamber of Commerce will receive $33,910 in grant money from the COVID-19 Rural Recovery Grant program that was approved by the Nevada Commission on Tourism on Wednesday. The grants are designed to help Nevada’s rural communities bolster tourism immediately, and to disseminate the message that they are open to visitors and safe.

“We are really excited about receiving the tourism grants so we can help promote that Mesquite is open and safe,” said Carol Kolson, President and CEO of the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce. Kolson has a background in economic development and tourism having held a previous Chamber CEO position in Washington state.

In order for the Chamber to receive the grants, they were required to complete a detailed application outlining the ways they would generate tourism in Mesquite.

The money received by the Chamber will be used for print advertising in the Nevada Visitors Guide, Nevada Magazine, and through a comprehensive tourism marketing campaign with a local Las Vegas tv channel.

“We feel this is just what Mesquite needs to get back on track during this pandemic. We are extremely grateful to the Nevada Commission on Tourism for this great opportunity for our rural communities,” said Kolson.

The relief program was established through the CARES Act that was received by the State of Nevada, and after the Nevada Commission on Tourism voted to distribute $1.65 million in grants to assist communities in recovering from COVID-19.

As part of its mission to help people live the healthiest lives possible, which includes providing direct access to cardiovascular care in rural areas in need of specialty providers, Intermountain Healthcare has opened its first heart and vascular clinic in Mesquite, Nevada.

The new clinic, located at 786 W. Pioneer Boulevard, Suite A, in Mesquite, will be staffed by five cardiology providers and two vascular clinicians, and will feature state-of-the art technology.

Starting in October, three providers who focus on electrophysiology will begin offering services to patients at the clinic. The full range of the services available at the clinic includes ECG, echocardiograms, vascular ultrasounds, device interrogations, cardiac arrhythmia risk evaluations, structural heart evaluations, general cardiology evaluations, and venous and arterial evaluations.

MESQUITE, NEV. – The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will reduce North Grapevine Road to one lane in each direction over Interstate 15 between Old Mill Road and West Pioneer Boulevard from 6 a.m., August 7, until 5 p.m., August 28, in Mesquite. The 24/7 lane reductions are needed for bridge deck improvements as part of a $9.1 million, 5.3-mile upgrade to Interstate 15 between West Mesquite Boulevard to the Arizona border that began in early April.

The project calls for milling and placing new asphalt roadway in both directions along Interstate 15 as well as repairing and resurfacing the freeway bridge decks at Exit 120 and Exit 122. Las Vegas Paving is the general contractor. The 6-month project also calls for placing new signage, drainage and lighting, among other improvements. Work is occurring in up to 2-mile increments Monday through Friday.

Motorists should use caution while travelling through the work zone, heed construction signage, and take alternate detour routes, if possible. NDOT works with Waze to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but unscheduled construction changes, closures and restrictions are possible due to weather or other factors. LAS VEGAS, NEV. – The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is inviting the public to comment on planned transportation projects and improvements outlined in its Work Program, including Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) updates, through August 1.

The STIP is a fiscally constrained, four-year planning document containing federal and state-funded transportation projects, as well as regionally significant transportation improvements funded through local and/or state dollars in accordance with the Federal Aid Highway Act and the Federal Transit Act. These projects improve the capacity of Nevada’s transportation system, such as increasing the number of lanes, constructing new roads and intersection improvements along with certain road maintenance projects. It also includes transit, rail, pedestrian walkway and bicycle facility projects. NDOT works closely with metropolitan planning organizations, counties, cities, tribes and other local agencies to develop the comprehensive statewide planning document to provide a transportation system that keeps Nevada safe and connected.

CCSD Guide to Reopening Schools Proposal

The job of a parent is one of the most challenging and rewarding jobs anyone can take
on during the course of their life. The desire to keep your children safe, happy and
healthy moves into the core of your very existence the moment you hold that little one in
your arms for the first time. And, it changes your perspective on what it means to be a
protector of all children. A reality that truly hits home as I stand with the care of 320,000
children entrusted to me by thousands of parents and guardians in our Valley.

I want to thank our students, families, educators, Board of School Trustees, and
members of our community regarding our collective efforts to educate our students
during school closures as a result of COVID-19. As a community, we have faced
immense challenges and obstacles and have proven to be a stronger, united team by
defying these obstacles together.

For the past few months, this district, alongside the rest of the global community
affected by COVID-19, has faced one of the toughest ordeals ever. The sudden
shutdown of almost every facet of life - retail, banking, entertainment, some medical
facilities, and yes, school - all over the world, has shaken the foundation of our lives.
Getting back to a place of normalcy will not be an easy process, but it's one we have to
work towards with thoughtfulness and patience. My focus is getting our children back on
track with their educational goals and we need the help of the entire community to get
there. Goals that we cannot ignore even as we continue to try to understand what this
virus means for our lives well into the future. But the safety of our children and staff is of
the utmost importance.

The plan that our team will be sharing tonight is not optimal, but it is sound. In January,
an entire country was brought to a standstill due to a virus that wreaked havoc across
our world, so this unconventional plan isn’t an educational structure that is conducive to
long term positive outcomes, but it is a plan that will ensure our students have an
educational future. Now, let me be clear, urban public education was already in a crisis!
The world just ignored the harsh truth and this unfortunate pandemic pulled back the
veil on the bleak and dire issues our students face and the inequities that we faced in
our urban schools. Our plan was guided by educational experts and we used mandatory
guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and follows the guidelines and
restrictions of Nevada’s Phase 2 requirements. The reopening of schools plan takes all
learners into consideration, especially our students with special needs and ELL
students, and it takes into account the health and safety of our staff at school sites. I
value the input of the Board of Trustees and the input of the community. Therefore, I pushed the team to bring our recommendation forward as soon as possible to provide
everyone time to process and refine our thinking. Returning our students to schools is a
community challenge; it will take all of us to do what is best for our students.

None of us could have ever imagined that this is the world in which we would currently
live. As businesses are reopening and getting people back to work, we understand that
the approach that we’ve chosen will make it tough on parents who don’t have child care
options during the day. We live in a community that operates 24 hours and I understand
the challenges that we are facing. I want to assure our parents that we understand your
concerns and we are working with our partners to try to find solutions.

Time is of the essence! Our principals need information ASAP! As a matter of fact,
today is too late - but we have been waiting for decisions to be made that are out of our
control! Our school leaders are already under an intense amount of pressure with a
nearly impossible timeline to plan, prepare, and implement a plan for instruction to serve
our students. At this time, we still do not have any information from the State regarding
our budget; therefore, we are building plans of which we have definitive information
regarding our potential budget. We must lead with a sense of urgency. Our students are
depending on us.

MESQUITE, NV (Leisure Services Dept.) -- Mesquite Community Education Foundation (MCEF) is teaming up with the City of Mesquite to host a “ 5K Run for Fund$” on Saturday, April 18, 2020, 10 am - 2 pm. Dr. Theresa Ofori of Cosmopolitan Dental and Nick Montoya, Director of Athletics & Leisure Services for the City are putting together the event that is open to runners and walkers of all ages. The racecourse will be set up on the streets near the high school, with race warmup and awards at Virgin Valley High School.

Participants can sign up as individuals or teams up to four persons. There is an entry fee per person, which includes a T-shirt and entry to the pre-run warmup and post-run festivities and awards. Racers are asked to enlist sponsors who will pledge cash payment for the distance and time they complete. The runner and team that collect the most scholarship money will win prizes. All racer sponsor funding goes toward scholarships for 2020 graduating seniors at Virgin Valley High School.

MCEF is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that was formed only two years ago to raise money to help VVHS graduates pay costs of college and trade school. The organization sponsors fundraiser activities and solicits donations from individuals and businesses that want to help our young people afford the high cost of advanced education. In its first two years, MCEF raised $25,000 which was awarded in $1000 increments to twenty-five grads. This year MCEF aims to raise $30,000 to award to members of the Class of 2019.

Race application forms are available now at the Mesquite Recreation Center front desk and Virgin Valley High School, with race fee paid by check or cash at the time of registration. Early registration at the Mesquite Recreation Center is encouraged by March 15 to assure T-shirts availability, but registration up to the day of the race will be accepted.

MESQUITE PARADE OF LIGHTS PREPARES FOR 5TH YEAR

The Mesquite Parade of Lights was created in 2015 to celebrate the Christmas holiday season twofold; to bring the community together to enjoy the lights and to give to those who are less fortunate. The event has grown to become Mesquite’s largest canned-food drive each year. Starting with just 1,000 pounds in 2015, the efforts of the community and businesses were able to increase that to 7,010 pounds of food in 2018 to split between the Virgin Valley Food Bank and the Salvation Army.

This year, the goal is to exceed 10,000 pounds of food. In addition to collecting food along the parade route, donation boxes will be set up at Mesquite Fire Station 3 located at 3 John Deere Drive, the Mesquite Recreation Center at 100 W. Old Mill Rd, Mesquite Senior Center at 102 W. Old Mill Rd, Sun City Mesquite Recreation Center at 1300 Flat Top Mesa, Mesquite Police Department at 695 Mayan Circle, and Mesquite City Hall at 10 E. Mesquite Blvd. during normal business hours beginning November 1.

Local groups, schools, organizations and businesses are encouraged to participate in this event and may submit an application by November 27 to the City of Mesquite Clerk’s office, 10 E. Mesquite Boulevard, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The entry fee is 15 pounds of food, due at the time of application submission or at the mandatory participant meeting on December 2.

Many changes have been made for this year’s theme, Parade of Music. HELP US BUILD A NEW DOG PARK!

MESQUITE, NV (Leisure Services Dept.) – The canine population of Mesquite is growing right along with the overall population boom here. Not only do people need a safe place to exercise and socialize, so do dogs!

To meet public interest and need, the City of Mesquite has proposed the creation of a new dog park at another location. The proposed dog park is a joint project of the Animal Control Division and Athletics & Leisure Services Department of the City of Mesquite.

To help raise funds to build the dog park, the Mesquite Animal Shelter is participating in this year’s National Strut Your Mutt, a fundraiser sponsored by Best Friends Animal Society. The shelter’s goal is to raise $25,000 during the event and is asking for the community to contribute to the dog park project.

“If everyone in Mesquite were to contribute the equivalent of $2 per person, we’d easily reach our goal,” said Joe Macias, Animal Control Manager.

The park would be available to Mesquite dog owners to provide exercise and socialization for their pets as well as to help save lives at the shelter by providing a place for shelter dogs learn positive interactions with people and other pets that will help them be ready for adoption.

Having recreational opportunities to share with a pet dog has been shown to increase opportunities to exercise, get outside, and socialize. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, regular walking or playing with pets can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels. Pets can help manage loneliness and depression by providing companionship, and studies have shown that the bond between people and their pets can increase fitness, lower stress, and bring happiness to their owners.

“The new park will be a welcome addition to our wonderful recreational opportunities and amenities here in Mesquite,” said Nicholas Montoya, Director of Athletics and Leisure Services.

Public dog parks allow dogs to get ample off-leash exercise and social activity with other dogs. When dogs get the physical and mental exercise they need, humans are able to notice a decrease in the level of troublesome behavior from their dogs which will benefit society as well, according to the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT).

The City of Mesquite officially designated the Animal Shelter as a “No Kill” facility last September. The shelter is a member of the Best Friends Network which is comprised of hundreds of public and private shelters, rescue groups, spay/neuter organizations and other animal welfare groups in all 50 states that are committed to saving the lives of homeless pets through effective adoption, spay/neuter and intake prevention programs.

“We are proud to be working with Best Friends toward the goal of taking this nation no-kill by 2025,” Macias added. “Working together along with the Athletics & Leisure Services Department as well we can accomplish great things for our local community and especially our dogs and cats.”

This huge fundraising effort started in June and will wrap up on October 16 with an open house at the shelter during which the public will be invited to learn more about the lifesaving work there as well as the wide variety of animal services available in the community.

MESQUITE, NV (Dept. of Athletics & Leisure Services) -- Recreational after School Program (Safekey) The City of Mesquite Athletics & Leisure Services Department has begun the school year of the Safekey program with success, with activities from 3:15pm - 6:15pm daily when school is in session. Safekey is an after school supervised recreational enrichment program for children K-5th grade, designed to meet the needs of the working parents.

The Safekey Program is staffed by trained recreation leaders that lead children in an activity or games, sports, arts, crafts and special events. In addition, a snack is provided and homework study period is available. The Safekey program is administered by The City of Mesquite Athletics & Leisure Services Department, which is dedicated to providing the best possible after school program for children.

Nicholas Montoya, Director of the Department said, “Our goal is to create an atmosphere in which safety, fun, recreation and social skills take place.” Registration is being taken now at the Mesquite Recreation Center, 100 W. Old Mill Road. The Safekey site is located at the Virgin Valley Elementary School cafeteria/multipurpose room. The school will provide parents with information on the SafeKey program, but cannot register children. Financial assistance may be available for parents/guardians who meet the income qualifications. The program is in coordination with the Clark County School District Calendar and the new Safekey after school program has begun.

MESQUITE, Nev. — Eureka Casino Resort is proud to continue the tradition of “Rockets Over the Red Mesa” on Thursday, July 4th. For the 8th year the Nevada POPS Orchestra will bring their full 32-piece orchestra. Joined this year by singer Travis Cloer, Las Vegas and Broadway star of Jersey Boys, they will perform songs saluting America and all of its brave heroes.

On Friday, July 5th Travis Cloer will take the stage to help Eureka Casino celebrate the launch of their new Gold Club. Travis will take you back in time with classics like “Let the Good Times Roll” and “Can’t Keep My Eyes Off You”.

NEVADA GOED TO HOLD INFORMATIONAL MEETING IN MESQUITE CITY HALL ON JUNE 6

MESQUITE, Nev. – Federal grant money is available to Nevada small businesses to open the door of the global marketplace to them, but many business owners just never apply for the free federal dollars. The Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) will hold an informational seminar next week to illustrate the benefits of the state’s exporting resources.

Small business owners and leaders are encouraged to attend an informational meeting about the State Trade Expansion Program (STEP) grant on Thursday, June 6, at 9:30 a.m. in the Council Chambers at Mesquite City Hall, 10 E. Mesquite Blvd., hosted by GOED, the City of Mesquite and the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce. So far this year 13 small Nevada businesses have taken advantage of the grant and have been awarded nearly $90,000.

“There are many great state programs designed to help small businesses, especially the STEP grant which provides businesses with money to help begin exporting their goods or help them expand their export market,” said Gov. Steve Sisolak. “I would encourage all business owners to attend this meeting to learn more about how the STEP grant can help their businesses thrive.”

GOED approves applications for the funding through the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) STEP grant. Businesses can get awards up to $5,000 to assist with pre-approved export expenses such as foreign market sales trips, trade show activities, international marketing materials, export trade show exhibits, overseas interpreters and training workshops.

“Small businesses fuel Nevada’s economy and expanding into foreign markets will put them on a path to grow their businesses,” said GOED Interim Executive Director Kris Sanchez. “If a business is considering expanding into global trade, they should apply for a STEP grant.”

Many times, the only way for Nevada businesses to connect with buyers all over the world is to attend trade shows in foreign markets. The STEP grant can help defray the cost of a business owner attending trade shows and creating global market promotional materials for the business.

DEFINING HEAT DISORDERS AND WARNING SIGNS FOR THE COMMUNITY

MESQUITE, NV (Leisure Services Dept.) – There are several ways in which heat can affect children, adults, and seniors. Some of the effects of heat on the body are more serious than others; thus, it is essential to know the signs and symptoms of the various heat-related disorders, starting with the most severe. Please be aware of the symptoms and stay hydrated at all times! Heat stroke is the most serious health problem for all in hot environments, is caused by the failure of the body internal mechanism to regulate its core temperature. Sweating stops and the body can no longer rid itself of excess heat. Signs of heat stroke include:

Mental confusion, delirium. loss of consciousness, convulsions or coma
A body temperature of 106 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
Hot dry skin which may be red, blotted or bluish
Throwing up, Dizziness & Stomach Cramps.

Victims of Heat Stoke will die unless treated promptly. While medical help should be called, the victim must be removed immediately to a cool area and his or her clothing soaked with cool water. He or she should be fanned vigorously to increase cooling. Prompt first aid can prevent permanent injury to the brain and other vital organs.

Heat exhaustion develops as a result of the loss of fluid through sweating when a worker has failed to drink enough fluids. The person with heat exhaustion still sweats but experiences extreme weakness or fatigue, giddiness, nausea, or headache. The skin is clammy and moist, the complexion pale or flushed, and the body temperature normal or slightly higher. Treatment is usually simple: the victim should rest in a cool place and drink plenty of an electrolyte drink or water.

Heat cramps frequently occur in the extremities. They abruptly appear as a sudden charlie horse and limit movement of the involved arm or leg. Heat cramps may be painful but spontaneously resolve over time. Heat cramps are caused by salt losses with sweating and are treated with electrolyte-balanced fluids, such as Gatorade, Powerade and other electrolyte drinks.

Heat syncope occurs when a person suddenly faints after standing for a long period. This fainting results from blood pooling in the legs, causing less blood to be delivered to the brain. Heat syncope may be treated by lying down or prevented by moving around while working, stay semi-active.

Heat rash , also known as prickly heat, may occur in hot and humid environments where sweat is not easily removed from the surface of the skin by evaporation. When extensive or complicated by infection, heat rash can be so uncomfortable that it inhibits sleep and impedes a person’s performance or even results in temporary total disability. It can be prevented by resting in a cool place and allowing the skin to dry.

VIRGIN VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS AND MESQUITE POLICE TEAM UP FOR THE 15TH ANNUAL GRAD NIGHT

Mesquite, NV – The Senior Class of 2019 will set out on new adventures in life and many wonderful and fulfilling careers. The Mesquite Police Department would like to make sure their journey after graduation begins in a safe and exciting way.

The Mesquite Police Department will provide the graduating class a fun filled night and a safe location to celebrate after graduation ceremonies. The evening will consist of entertainment, food, and many activities designed for the graduates.

Members of the Virgin Valley High School senior class along with Mesquite Police Officers will be contacting local Mesquite businesses to ask for donations, which will fund the event’s many activities and safe environment. Private donations from the public are also greatly appreciated. This entire event is funded by donations and cannot take place without the generous help of our community.

The grad party will be held on Friday, May 24, 2019 at The City of Mesquite Recreation Center. The doors will be open from 9:00 PM until midnight. The doors are locked from midnight to 5:00 AM, attendees are not allowed to leave without being escorted by a parent, but we strongly encourage no one to leave during the event.

“The Mesquite Police Department wants to give the graduating seniors a safe and fun environment for an evening that many graduates will remember for the rest of their lives,” said Chief Chesley MaQuade. “Every year the officers, staff and parents have enjoyed spending quality time with the local seniors and making sure their night is safe and memorable.”

This will be the 15th year the police department has put on the event with the assistance of the City of Mesquite, Mesquite businesses and the wonderful citizens of our community.

MESQUITE, NV (Dept. of Athletics & Leisure Services) - In April, the Southern Nevada Health District reported the first human case of West Nile virus in Southern Nevada in 2019. The individual, a female over the age of 50, had the more serious neuroinvasive form of the illness and has recovered. There were no reported human cases of West Nile virus in Clark County last year.

“West Nile virus is a preventable illness, and it is important to remind everyone to take steps to prevent mosquito bites, especially as we start to spend more time outside,” said Dr. Joe Iser, Chief Health Officer for the Southern Nevada Health District. “There are simple things you can do to prevent bites and to prevent mosquito breeding around your home to protect yourself, your family, and your community.”

West Nile virus is spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes that have acquired the virus by feeding on infected birds. The illness is not spread person to person. Many people with the virus will have no symptoms or very mild clinical symptoms of illness. Mild symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach, and back. In some cases, the virus can cause severe neurologic illness and even death.

The Southern Nevada Health District’s Mosquito Surveillance Program regularly tests mosquito pools for West Nile, St. Louis Encephalitis, and Western Equine Encephalitis. As of May 3, 323 traps were set throughout Clark County with 1,906 mosquitoes submitted to the Southern Nevada Public Health Laboratory for analysis. The Health District has not reported any mosquito pools that are positive for West Nile virus, St. Louis Encephalitis, or Western Equine Encephalitis so far this season. The program also conducts surveillance for Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, the two species known to spread the Zika virus.

“It’s important to remember that mosquito-borne disease can be in our community even though our Mosquito Surveillance Program has not identified any West Nile virus-positive mosquito pools,” added Iser. The Health District recommends the following to prevent mosquito bites and to eliminate breeding sources:

Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellants containing DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), or 2-undecanone.

Wear pants and long-sleeved shirts to reduce mosquito exposure when outdoors.
Eliminate areas of standing water around your home, including non-circulating ponds, “green” swimming pools, and accumulated sprinkler runoff, which support mosquito breeding.

The City of Mesquite Athletics and Leisure Services Department is partnering with Dan Slater, Senior Environmental Health Specialist at the Health District and Joe Macias, Animal Control Supervisor at the Mesquite Police Department (MPD) to host a training/education seminar on breeding, prevention information, and updated disease statistics on Monday, May 20, 2019., We want to thank the Health District and MPD for providing this information to the public., The seminar is free to the entire community.,

MESQUITE, NV (Dept. of Athletics & Leisure Services) - The Mesquite Police Department (MPD), the Department of Athletics and Leisure Services along with the Virgin Valley Elementary School PTO is hosting a Bicycle Rodeo.

On Thursday, May 16, 2019 the City of Mesquite Police Department, Department of Athletics & Leisure Services along with in coordination with the Virgin Valley Elementary School Parent Teachers Organization (PTO) will be conducting a 5 station bicycle safety course (rodeo). This special event will help our children in the community know the do’s and don’ts of riding their bicycles on and off the roads. To develop the needed skills necessary to survive when a potential hazard exists. “Summer break is right here and we want our kids to be as safe as possible when riding through the City,” said Shannon Hughes, PTO President.

The information below is provided to assist in educating our children on the rules of the road.

Motor vehicle laws apply to Bicycles.
Need brakes.
Need to stop at stop signs.
No riding doubles either on riding pegs or handle bars.
Need to Ride bicycles on the right side of the road.
No Clinging to another vehicle.
Don’t carry anything that would prevent the rider from having both hands on the handle bars.
Night time riding- (1) need front white light (2) need rear and side reflectors (4) recommended rear red light.

Working with the State of Nevada and The RTC of Southern Nevada the Department of Athletics and Leisure Services has received a Donation/Grant of around 750 helmets to hand out to each participants of the Bike Rodeo on May 16, 2019. “We want to thank the State of Nevada (NDOT) Nevada Department of Transportation and especially the (RTC) Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada for the Helmets, the Mesquite Police Department and the PTO for allowing us to be involved, the Mesquite Police Department will teach and guide the children to be as safe as possible for bicycle safety during these summer months”, said Nicholas Montoya, Director of Athletics & Leisure Services.

MESQUITE CHAMBER CREATES TASK FORCE

[Mesquite, Nevada, March 12, 2020] The Mesquite NV Chamber of Commerce is launching a Mesquite COVID-19 Community Task Force. The task force will be made of Business Leaders and Health Professionals. Its mission is to provide current information and resources about Coronavirus to the business and residential community of Mesquite, Nevada.

“The Chamber is working to ensure our local business community is prepared for any scenario and wants to provide factual information to the Mesquite community,” said Carol Kolson, Mesquite Chamber President and CEO. “It is prudent for businesses and the community to take steps to be prepared even though Mesquite does not currently have any cases of Coronavirus.”

The Chamber will be facilitating a meeting with Business Leaders and Health Professionals at the Eureka Casino Resort on Tuesday, March 17th from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Businesses wanting to participate may rsvp for the meeting by calling 702-346-2902.

The purpose of the meeting is to quickly implement the Three P’s: Prevent, Plan, and Practice. Businesses of all sizes can be effective by simply posting and communicating vital information, updates, and reminders at work.
